The phrase "a breath of fresh air" may be
trite, but to those who have trouble breathing it represents a life-affirming
concept. Respiratory distress is a frightening state and the pulmonary
specialist is dedicated to relieving either its symptoms or its cause.
Pulmonary medicine is a subspecialty of internal
medicine devoted to evaluating and caring for patients with lung diseases. A
pulmonologist is specially trained to care for patients with respiratory
illnesses such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and pneumonia.
Pulmonologists also see patients with lung malignancies, infectious diseases
affecting the respiratory system, inflammatory lung diseases and occupational
dust diseases.
When you have been referred to a pulmonary
specialist, you can expect to receive a thorough evaluation. This will include
taking your medical history, a physical examination and appropriate testing
procedures, and specific investigation of your problem. In determining treatment
protocols, the pulmonologist will work with your personal physician to ensure
that the course of treatment selected will be the safest and most effective for
your individual condition.
An informed patient is a more satisfied patient.
Educating patients is an important part of the AMS
philosophy. This means explaining your treatment in detail, providing you with
literature on your illness or treatment, and generally making certain that you
understand the care that is prescribed for you. The more informed you are, the
better able you will be to participate in your progress, so we encourage your
questions.
